Summer Camp: Mini Med School Graduation

Mini Med School Students Graduate!

Mini med school campers and their adults take turns practicing "surgery" with pretend play.

This summer, Imagine hosted our first Mini Med School camp. Young medical enthusiasts, aged 7-11, spent a week learning about germs and diseases, systems of the body, and how technology is helping the medical field. They participated in hands-on activities that imitated surgery and created their own “surgical tools” out of common supplies. They each also did a research project on a topic in medical history! Every aspect of the camp was designed to parallel real medical school.

As the camp came to a close, the mini med students went through a graduation ceremony – just like real doctors – where they received their own lab coat, stethoscope, and Certificate of Completion of their medical course. The campers were delighted to show their learning to their family members, visibly animated while talking about how the body works and their research projects, which included the invention of Band-Aids and medical practitioners Florence Nightingale and Alexa Canady. The graduates eagerly encouraged the adults to try performing surgery just like they had done during camp, giving advice on how to perform the task successfully!

Many of the children excitedly asked, “Are these real??” when shown the stethoscopes they would receive. By testing them on family members, the kids found out that, yes, these stethoscopes really work! The new grads’ eyes lit up as they listened to their family members’ hearts beating compared to their own.

Imagine has grown into the special place that it is today through the strength of a supportive community made up of people like you. A place where children know they can have big dreams because adults like you want their lives to be enriched through playful learning.

Yes, I will be a Champion for Children
