February 2025 Focus: Alma Thomas
“The use of color in my paintings is of paramount importance to me. Through color I have sought to concentrate on beauty and happiness rather than on a man’s inhumanity to man.” – Alma Woodsey Thomas
Alma Woodsey Thomas was a remarkable African American artist and educator based in Washington, D.C. Known for her vibrant, abstract paintings, she rose to prominence after retiring from a 35-year teaching career at Shaw Junior High School. As the first graduate of Howard University’s art department, she maintained strong ties to the institution throughout her life.
Thomas’ work celebrated creativity beyond race and gender, reflecting her belief that true artistic expression knows no boundaries. Her paintings showcased colorful, overlapping rectangles inspired by the beauty of nature, including trees and flowers.
Thomas named her unique style “Alma’s Stripes,” which can be seen in her work “Resurrection,” which is currently part of the White House Collection.
Join us to learn about Alma Woodsey Thomas and create your own masterpiece in the style of “Alma’s Stripes.”
